The NBA Development League opens its playoffs Wednesday, with coach Nancy Lieberman's expansion Texas Legends facing Tulsa in one of the two scheduled games.
League-best Iowa faces Utah in the opener of their best-of-three series. The other two first-round series begin later in the week.
The NBA D-League is coming off its most successful regular season, featuring 21 players called up from the NBA's minor league. The Philadelphia 76ers signed guard Antonio Daniels on Tuesday, calling up the NBA champion with the 1999 San Antonio Spurs who had been playing in Texas for Lieberman, the first female coach on an

Former Mavs star Aguirre hospitalized after falling ill
Former Dallas Maverick great Mark Aguirre was hospitalized Wednesday after falling ill at a Plano, Texas, athletic club, but reports that he had an apparent heart attack were inaccurate, according to former Mavericks' general manager Frank Zaccanelli.
Aguirre, one of the greatest players in the team's history, apparently had a circulation problem while he was working out on a treadmill, according to Zaccanelli, who remains a close friend of Aguirre's.
"There was no heart attack," Zaccanelli said. "What it was, it was a clogged vessel - not artery, vessel - and while

Ex-Red Wing Dominik Hasek, 46, wants to play one more year

The Dominator is not done yet.
After leading Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League with seven shutouts last season, 46-year-old Dominik Hasek is eager to play at least one more year in Europe’s elite professional league. Hasek, however, ruled out a return to the NHL, where he played 16 seasons, the last in 2007-08 when he won the Stanley Cup with Detroit.
“I definitely want to play one more year in Russia. I want to win the cup over there,” Hasek said Saturday, during a return to his former home in Buffalo. “I feel great, in good shape.”
Hasek completed his first

League plans to enforce personal conduct policy during lockout

And just when it appears that public opinion would begin to swing firmly in the favor of the owners, the National Football League drop kicks the pendulum in the other direction.
Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that the NFL intends to enforce the personal conduct policy against any players who find trouble, or vice versa, during the lockout.
“While players won’t be able to get the benefit of our evaluation and counseling program during the work stoppage, the personal conduct of players and employees is an integrity-of-the-game issue,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told Marvez.  “Any misconduct that is detrimental to

Gary Williams is Maryland basketball, like it or not

Gary Williams rescued Maryland's basketball program from NCAA probation, pushed it to the top and remains second to none as a game coach.
In recent years, though, Williams also has fallen short of the high competitive standards he set, while refusing to revise his outdated recruiting philosophies.
In the process, Williams has become such a polarizing figure, most Terrapin fans probably agree with only one-half of the above.
But the Maryland coach is all of this. He is a hero who resuscitated his alma mater after Bob Wade's brief and disastrous tenure resulted in crippling NCAA sanctions during the early
